Pre-Doctoral Psychology Internship Program at UC Irvine
Letter from the Training Director
Dear Prospective Applicant,
Thank you for your interest in our APA accredited internship program. I am very proud of the program that the Training Committee has developed and the energy and commitment of the training staff. As you review our program information I believe you will find that we value training and are highly invested in providing you with the training you are seeking. We understand that the decision ahead of you is an important one and that it can be daunting to figure out which internship sites best fit your training needs. We hope that the information on our website will prove useful as you narrow down your choices.
The UC Irvine Counseling Center Internship has many remarkable features. I would like to highlight two that I feel are especially worth highlighting. One of our training focuses is multiculturalism and social justice. The Counseling Center staff is not only interested in “diversity issues”, we live them. Our staff composition reflects this ideal. In addition, many staff members have distinguished themselves as leaders in the field of promoting multiculturalism and social justice by presenting at national conferences, publishing relevant articles, authoring chapters in edited texts, developing innovative programs related to aspects of human diversity, and assisting large organizations with increasing awareness of diversity issues. More to the point, several staff members have held leadership positions in diversity-related divisions of national professional organizations. We take this expertise and use it in every aspect of our training program to enhance the cultural competence of our interns.
Another feature that I would like to highlight is an opportunity for interns to co-teach academic courses. The courses range from Fresh Perspectives (a class for first-year students) to Intimate Relationships and topics on diversity and multiculturalism. These courses are conducted in the residence halls and provide a convenient place for students to attend classes.
Please take some time to review the information we’ve included on our site. I’m hopeful you will find that the training we offer is what you are seeking and will choose to apply to the UC Irvine Counseling Center Internship. If any questions remain after your review, please do not hesitate to contact me. I can be reached at (949) 824-6457 or mdemania@uci.edu.
Cordially,
Michael E. DeMania, Ph.D.
